You wouldnt actually have to weld anything, here the precise steps you shall follow;

1 - Rip the model, import in max, apply materials, weld

2 - Delete the barrel(making sure to keep rim's rear face and hub)

3 - Open a barrel from Rim Resizer and scale your rim to fit its diameter

4 - Move the rim so that barrel/lip's external edge meets the edge from Rim Resizer's barrel

5 - Select the barrel(eventually apply a custom material), convert in editable poly mode, select it's verical edge(with border selection) and delete it

6 - Attach your rim to the barrel(not opposite)

I think there's a sort of video tutorial about this in the latest Rim Resizer download page, check it out and in case you still need help shout me on skype(i will answer asap).

Don leave stock barrels for any reason, they look too damn bad. :D
