Hi, Ive been a member on Vstanced for a while just browsing through pre-made vehicles and items for SLRR. I decided it was time to step up and create my own but its not so straight forward. Ive always been inspired by Photoshop, 3ds Max and Vehicles. These three go together well so why not use them. Im currently buying my second car which happens to be a Morris Minor. Unfortunately I have yet to find a Model on any SLRR provided site of one. So i set out to start it. Now im not Turn10 level good or even playstation 1 worthy. But i am inspired to do this for a living. I mean. I am studying Games Development at University LOL :)) So anyway. Heres a few snapshots of a few days work. Its really rough and i would more than anything appreciatte some insight or help towards this project. If everything goes smoothly i will create more cars. I can create models fairly easily its just the converting that always hassles me. Anyway. Hate away.

PS: Its FAAAR from finished and im just fitting it in while on break from Uni.

It would be really nice to see some more diversity in SLRR mods. Keep working on it, and as long as you practice, you'll get better at modeling. :D

this is very ambitious as I'm sure you understand.. modelling a car from scratch takes months/years of work so well done for attempting it, I would get the 3d model perfect before rushing to slr :) and when you get to SLR start with my rim tutorial.

reason for that is simple.. it covers the basics, gives you basic understanding of how mods are made and it will be a nice kick start to car modding.

Cheers JC. I took your advice and started following your tutorial. Heres how far ive got with the wheels. I decided id like to make some Audi TT compomotives. Heres my renders.

So i created my wheel and put it in game. I followed all the information throughout your tuturial and got this error. Heres some quick pictures. Ill be going in more depths i just wanted to see what my first wheel would be like aha.

you need to move the mesh back/forward in max to adjust the position of it in game :)

I did that :) it worked and i made a flush rim, the wheel fits nicely. Moving onto hopefully a volkswagen bora rim next. I seem to have a problem though with the texture. It doesnt show up as chrome :(

Added 1 day later:

Okay so im a little stuck. I managed to create a paintable rim, but im struggling to install a full texture on the rim such as the Volkswagen logo installed on this rim pictured below. I cannot figure out how i would go about installing it. I also appear to be having an issue with the spray coating. It seems to be displaying a grid behind the paint or in the paint. I used Materials created by JC. But the paint doesnt seem to be a problem when in red, only when i go about changing to another colour.. Heres the pictures.

I hope someone can help because im extremely eager to finish my car for the game. :)))

So uvw mapping? would i just map the center? also what pixel ratio should i go about using for the center?

what you need to do is to keep your UVW map in the "blue" box on max when you map it, other thing to note is to make sure you do a proper unwrap so all your faces are flat on the UVW map and can be painted.

So ive been working on a uv map, i set it so the front face is the main part but which texture should i apply? the chrome sets it extremely large and how do i transfer the uv map to photoshop to edit?

Added 6 hours 31 minutes later:

Is anyone able to talk to me over skype to guide me through uv mapping? i understand the concept of it but i dont quite understand how to copy the grid for my texture to be placed on. I have a few more questions to ask too. :)

Added 69 days later:

Hey guys, sorry ive been busy, ive not had loads of time to work on slrr models, instead ive been using my spare time to look into the javas and changing their values BUT ive come across an issue, my notepad++ doesnt seem to like class files. How do i get around that? because im sure that some of the information i can see, id like to read. It seems to come up in some sort of alien language to me haha.

You can't edit class files. You need javas of them

Wireframe looks good, but you should round the center part IMO.

Isn't that a 3SDM 0.06?
Anyway it looks quite good, but IMO you should try to make the middle part round.

Yeah i think im going to adjust the middle piece. Its quite difficult to create the centres aha! But thanks dudes :). I really need a bit of guidance on uv'ing if any of you can help a hand and yes @razer11 that is a 3sdm 0.06 :)

What I suggest you is that you use the way this guy make his rims:
*LINK*

I've always used that method to model my wheels and it has worked the best, altho the way the guy that made the tutorials does it isn't the best way to do it.
Maybe one day I'll make a video showing how I make my rims.

Cheers man! i totally went the wrong way about making wheels i think haha, i usually start with a plane then add and connect edges as i work through a spoke then use array to make my rim. This way MAY just help aha. Any chance you can shine some light on UV'ing? would i be better uv'ing one spoke and then arraying it afterwards or uv after ive arrayed it all round?

Tbh I really suck at UVW Unwrapping as I always ask someone else to do it for me usually.

All you need to do is bend the rim now and that can be quite tricky

Cheers man! we'll heres the thing. I did notice that and im still trying to address what i should do because cooncaving it is bleedin hard i relaly should have done that from the start so i think AS a treat and a mistake fix im going to do a Concaved version aswell as the flat one you know like 'because of offset difference with wheels and tuck etc on vehicles, so flat upfront and concave on rear or double concave if you can run that aha (realism ftw yo!) But i am struggling on how to go about bolts :( what should i do to get them -.-

Added 41 minutes later:

So @razer11 i test Uv'ed for a trial and used the concaved set up. Its actually going better than i planned. I think this wheel may be in the game sooner than i planned! :D Also the texture is horrendous but dont worry im going to create a nicer rendered texture from scratch anyway so it shouldnt be too bad aha :) Now you wouldnt by any chance know how to create a realistic chrome finish? or how id apply it using materials would you?
