It's pretty common practice, actually. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai, and Kia all make lots of US-specific models. Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi all make a few specifically for Europe. For instance, for 1994-1997, Honda made a different Accord for Europe than for Japan and the US, while for 2003 and up, the US accord is different from the Japanese/European Accord. (There were actually three different Accords between 1998 and 2002.) Similar story with the Honda Civic.

In particular, the Aygo is actually a joint venture with PSA Peugeot Citroen, and it was built in the Czech Republic. (I only found this out when I looked it up, but I knew that it was not exactly a Japanese car beforehand.)
